Description
‘Unspoken’ is an emotional drama about two estranged brothers who reunite, as their mother clings to life in hospital.
The story is a journey of rebirth. Walter and Casey Treggar, two twenty-something brothers a world apart are forced to confront the truth about an unspoken accident that destroyed their family.
Casey, the younger brother, works for the local fishery and has been recently promoted, ahead of his colleagues, creating undue tension. Walter’s arrival in town sparks a change in Casey as he battles to keep his work and personal life in balance.
We learn that Walter almost drowned as a child and Casey came to his aid, saving his older brother’s life and being crowned a hero. The incident however left Walter diagnosed with hypoxia and constantly ‘in and out’ of group homes and psyche wards.
Soon after his arrival, Walter is checked into the town’s group home and immediately attracts trouble, assaulting an orderly for which he’s to be sent back to his institution in Seattle. Realising that he needs Walter to help bring their mother back to health, Casey comes to Walter’s aid and assumes responsibility for his care.
The two are now forced to share the family home where they once grew up.
Casey struggles to keep equilibrium as Walter continues to test him, especially as he refuses to see their dying mother. Casey reaches out to Julia Griffin for assistance, a middle-aged colleague with whom he’s also having an affair with.
Casey tries to progress his relationship with Julia, which she politely rebuffs, their no-strings arrangement isn’t enough for Casey and with the pressure of Walter, his mother and the added responsibility at work, all appear to be taking their toll.
The situation reaches boiling point when Walter disappears with Julia’s son. The incident draws a wedge between Casey and Julia and leaves Casey no other option but to confront Walter and his medical condition.
Casey takes Walter to the very spot where Walter drowned as a child. Brutally he forces Walter to re-live the incident that changed all their lives. The truth of what happened that day emerges.
Upon their return, Walter begins showing signs of improvement. Just as we believe the brothers will pull through, accident strikes and Walter is blamed yet again. Walter pleads for his innocence but is committed into his group home.
Walter reaches out to Casey for help, he begs his brother to take him to see their mother but his pleas fall on deaf ears.
The drama builds to a crescendo as Walter escapes the group-home, desperate to see his mother but his life takes an unexpected turn. What happens to Walter? To Casey? To their mother? The answers to these questions and many more are weaved in this timeless drama.
‘Unspoken’ is a universal story about broken relationships that explores the subtle, instinctive bonds in humanity.
